Earlier this year, a man by the name of Lawrence Choi launched a contest which was supposed to be the revival of the traditional Miss Asia Pacific. He promised national directors from around the world air tickets for the candidates, great cash prizes, and worldwide broadcast of a “magnificent event” to be held in South Korea.
The pageant, which was supposed to happen in the first semester, took place only in October after moving the date three times. First Warning.
Just when the chosen contestants were preparing to fly to the pageant in May, another email was sent to national directors saying: “The competition will be held in October, and the directors will have to pay for the delegates’ airfare (going against what had been originally offered)”. Most directors immediately withdrew. After all these delegates were removed from the pageant’s website, on their Facebook page, organizers said “it had been the work of a ‘hacker’”. They never explained that such candidates had withdrawn from the competition due to their lack of organization and word.
But all of that was nothing compared to what the 40+ candidates had to face once they arrived in Korea.
For instance, Miss Venezuela placed second in the “talent competition”, without having performed! The girls had to sleep on the floor, as there were not enough beds in their hotel rooms; they barely had enough food to eat. And it does not end there: Amy Willerton, the British candidate, fled the competition along with other girls after being offered votes in exchange for sex (READ HERE).
Miss Guyana published a series of videos on Youtube showing some of the most absurd situations which took place in this event.
In the end, an all-Korean panel of judges chose Miss Korea as the winner, something that, at that point, really did not matter (candidates who saw the voting sheets claimed the Korean contestant placed 3rd in reality). Some girls took days to be allowed to return home, because the “host hotel” held them back for not paying their hotel bills, which was of the pageant organizers’ responsibilities.
It is important to note that Mr Choi used the “Miss Asia Pacific” name without legal permit, once this scam clearly has nothing to do with the real Miss Asia Pacific pageant, ran by Filipinos. Things became even worse when the organization added “World” to the pageant’s name, after all, Miss World Asia Pacific is the title the best ranked candidate in the region gets in the Miss World competition.
Earlier this year, Global Beauties was invited to cover and give promotion to this pageant, but refused to do so. It was finally covered by a fan page which shamefully appears as one of the pageant’s “sponsors”.
Lawrence Choi blamed the local committees in each of the three Korean cities for the pageant’s fiasco. However, the man had plenty of time to organize the pageant, which had been originally scheduled for June 4, and it was HIS PAGEANT, which means, it was his responsibility. The winner, Park Sae-Byul, resigned after she found out that organizers would not give her any of the promised prizes -- US$ 30 thousand in cash + US$ 170 thousand in “goods” (whatever that means). None of the winners would receive their prizes after Choi declared the pageant “a failure”.
At the moment, several organizations are taking legal matters against this pageant, among them the owners of the original “Miss Asia Pacific” trademark. Also, a considerable amount of directors who sent delegates to this event have also been sounding off in social media, explaining the situation.
We hope this horrible pageant episode ends in the courts and that Mister Choi and all the parties involved pay for their crimes.
It will serve as an alert to pageant directors: they should be careful with “new pageants” they send their candidates to. Clearly the 47 women who participated in Korea ran serious risk away from home.

This should be on “60 minutes” or “20/20″.
Oh my…
I read Amy’s article via the link. All of the candidates should have left right then and there! It was nothing but an attempt to force the contestants to prostitute themselves.
As we said before and we informed many national Directors not to join this unprofessional competition, but some just take anything they get for any competition they are invited for,i call them as week directors and they dont think about their contestants when sending the girls.
I am very happy that global beauties are watching all the pagents, there are some other competitions who are very bad too, like Miss Globe in Turkey,Queen of the world,Beauty of the world etc.
Lawrence Choi must pay a panelty to all the contestants, and he should be out of Buisness .
I don’t this person was IN business to begin with. I don’t know what was the motivation behind this sham pageant but I got the sneaky suspicion that it was to procure girls for the sponsors (if you can even call them THAT). Didn’t Global Beauties published a story awhile back in regards to a Miss Peru who was sent to compete in some international pageant that turn out not to exist?
Grace,
“I am very happy that global beauties are watching all the pagents, there are some other competitions who are very bad too, like Miss Globe in Turkey,Queen of the world,Beauty of the world etc.”
Which are other bad competition?
PLENTY!!!! Even this whole page won’t fit to list them all LOL. That’s why I only trust (and care for) 2 (international) pageants : Miss World & Miss Universe.
There is a wikipedia entry on the pageant and it listed Miss France as the winner after the resignation of Miss Korea. I am surprised that most of the other contestants tough it out.
O my god! Holding their bags not to let them go at the airport! what kind of people still do that nowadays? Do you imagine Mr Trump running after a contestant and trying not to let her go away?. NO.
This pageant is crazy. Not enough food and bed? What’s the f…?
I’m shocked! really i am!
This gets even better. It seems according to the website CriticalBeauty, former Miss Universe Japan Miyako Miyazaki was one of the judges and Miss India, Tanvi Singla, was the second-runner up in Sushmita Sen’s I Am She pageant. Sushmita was in attendance and she was positively jubilant that Singla eventually placed in the top 5. Oh Sushmita…how far have we fallen……
before I knew no contest miss asia pacific I also hold a contest that I called the same dream and I just know if the contest is really there but it’s been down for a few years when I was just imagining making this contest I always choose the best country to tourism, the best hotel , best venue, even the best singer contest jury and my dream was Miss Asia Pacific with a participant may only be from Asia to the Caribbean region countries of Europe and Africa, while not Include in the contest in my dreams
Wow I’m totally sppechless. My jaw is dropping to the ground as I type…
Sorry for the typo. I meant “speechless”.
shocking
It seems this pageant was able to get a lot of contestants to participate because unlike Miss Universe and Miss World, there are apparently no franchise fees involved, as directors were contacted by invitation to send their girls, AND it has a name similar to a previous reputable pageant.
What is disturbing is that it seems only Miss Wales, Guyana and Costa Rica were the most vocal…as most of the contestants actually went on to participate in the finals despite all the warning signs….and their directors doesn’t seem to know what is going on until after the fact. As Sushmita Sen was in the finals and she was tweeting about how great her delegate was doing in the pageant…totally oblivious to what was going on behind the scenes and and maybe even in front of.
You are absolutely wrong, KL. Miss World national directors pay a substantial annual fee as well. Interest in Miss World in higher than in Miss Universe in most parts of the World.
As I said, Miss Universe AND Miss World.
GB, please read the comment of KL very well…KL said “unlike Miss Universe and Miss World, there are apparently no franchise fees involved”…that means MU and MW have franchise fees “unlike” MAPW!
I believe that you misread KL’s comment:
“It seems this pageant was able to get a lot of contestants to participate because unlike Miss Universe AND Miss World, there are apparently no franchise fees involved…”
KL stated that Miss World directors do pay a fee.
I believe that is the only explanation that a new untried pageant like this would attract so many participants: Miss World and Miss Universe have tradition, name recognition, and a reputation behind them despite franchise fees….and never mind that many of the contestants, according to the wikipedia entry, are alumni from Miss Universe, World, International, TQI, etc, of previous years (in other words, “recycled” contestants).
And also what really infuriate me is that all of the contestants put a lot of effort into it, for I surfed the web and saw some of the photos of the contest and Miss Guyana’s videos. They came with their gowns and national costumes and what not. For this Choi character to declare the pageant a failure, it sure wasn’t any of the contestants’ fault.
And Sushmita Sen…it is a sad day that she have to resort to scraping at the bottom of the barrel of this nonsensical contest in order to found some success with her I Am She pageant. The second runner up of her pageant placed 5th in this sham of a pageant. I’m not sure if I would be proud of that considering Miss Puerto Rico won Best National Costume of EUROPE and Miss Venezuela placed 2nd in a talent competition she didn’t compete in.
I hope Global Beauties will continue to cover this as I am curious to see if there are any further development in getting these scam artists the justice they deserve!
One final thing, wikipedia actually have an entry for a second edition, Miss Asia Pacific World 2012. I highly doubt that is going to happen. This pageant’s reputation has been “totally destroyed”.
the face of this 3 girls looks so pathetic…so sad.
I used to have high regard for South Korea and I’m in disbelief that this shameful event happened in that country.
miss earth is best
Omigosh you guys I just read the article about Amy (Miss Wales), and it said she is planning on taking legal action against the organisers of the pageant…I’m with her all the way…this pageant is a sham and rife with corruption, but my biggest disappointment lies in the way the contestants were treated, both as women and as individuals…what a shame, what a shame…what were those people thinking, trying to offer these smart, intelligent, poised and dignified women their votes in exchange for sex? Have they no respect for women at all? To the contestants who were exploited or mistreated in any way throughout the course of this “pageant”, my heart reaches out to all of you…I pray that justice will rule in your favour…
Amy, in a YouTube video said that to pursue this lawsuit, she has to go back to South Korea, and she have no intention of doing that.
I am so pleased to read some of the overseas directors could see through this and pulled their girls out of this rubbish pageant – and the ones that did participate will not be going next year.
As for the winner being Miss Korea how rigged was that and then to not get any prizes at all.
The Taiwan media reported that the Queen of the world Organization forced contestants harlotry, you can find the news video on miss-china.cn
Aren’t these poor girls supposed to be given the numbers of their embassy before leaving their home country? What were their national directors thinking? Sending off girls in foreign land without protection? WHERE WERE THEIR EMBASSY PEOPLE?????!
Grace and Divalicious says that there are lots of bad pageants the same thing happened on Miss Asia Pacific World, so meaning if Miss World and Miss Universe is the most respectable pageant in the world that means Miss Earth Pageant is absolutely bad also for you right guys? I mean do you think Miss Earth is also a bad pageant? Any views about this?
I never said that. But then again, Miss Earth is still relatively new. It doesn’t have the same prestige and longevity the same way as Miss World/Universe yet. It CAN, however, grow large to the same level as Miss World/Universe. Have to admit, I see improvement in the pageant since the early days of planting-trees-in-bikinis-and-high-heels when they first started. But for NOW, they’re not there yet.
As for Miss International, another so-called “grand slam” beauty pageant, yes it has the longevity and tradition similar to Miss World/Universe, but TBH it hasn’t really evolved much. I think Miss International is still stuck in the past with its outdated vision and mission. It still holds tight its traditional (and somewhat outdated) standard of beauty. The one thing I really despise about this pageant is how much they discriminate against black delegates. It’s been more than half a century since the pageant first began and still no African winners yet? Wow! And how many times do you see a black delegate entering the semis? Exactly! (I notice this kind of discrimination usually happens more in Asian-based pageants.) That’s why I have stopped caring for this pageant since long time ago.
Ha! Nice to know I am not the only one who remember the infamous “planting trees in bikini and high heels” event. It has to be one of the wackiest, if not exploitative, moments in pageantry history.
The south Korean government should get involved and release a public apology specially to those delegates who were mistreated, sexually harrassed and deceived by this pageant brouhaha.
There are a lot of really racist and anti South Korean comments posted on YouTube. A lot of the comments claimed in the entertainment industry in South Korea, it is well known that women have to give sexual favors in order to get ahead. One comment brought up the suicide of actress Ja Yeong Jiang, who left behind a suicide memoir listing all the men she claimed she was forced by her agency to perform sexual favors. This is not only the norm, but expected!
The way this pageant was conducted and organized was disgusting. Shame on the Korean organizers!
Lawrence Chio should be captured and put in prison, and pay a gig panelty to the contestants.
OMG good thing I didn’t send my contestant I have email copy from the guy I was liaising with and Franchise application form if someone need it to be published here
Miss Wales should also sue Asia One news paper they all the same from Asian Countries everything is all about money they can’t work according to the books
QUE HORRORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
These 3 girls are FIERCE and BRAVE.
I LOVE THEM!!!
Yes, I remember questioning the circumstances surrounding this pageant when the first date it was originally going to take place was annouced. I also remember asking why it was called asia pacific world when it was going to include girls from africa and the americas which are not exactly in the asia pacific region- i think this should have sent a warning to the national pageant organisers!!
The original Miss Asia Pacific became Miss Asia Pacific International and started to accept contestants from all over the world, so I guess the other directors thought this was a revival of sort of the old pageant, which haven’t been held in the past several years. On another website I searched, it is called Asia Pacific World because the winner will primarily work and do promotions primarily in the Asia Pacific region.
Miss Costa Rica was one of the three girls who walked away from this peagent but I am very surprised that in Costa Rica I haven’t heard about this situacion not even local newspapers or the organization Reinas de Costa Rica that sent this girl to this peageant have pronunced any word about it. It seems to me that they don’t want to talk about it, like it never happened.
We have to be very careful in the future with all the pageants,to be sure about the hotels, food, cheprons, and the programe, specialy with Korea,China&Turkey .
And if strong national Directors are involved in those unknown pageants.
Thanks for Global Beauties who are waching those pageants.
