Adiós a Venezuela , excelente Miss USA.

That’s true, the past few winners have all been very natural looking and not plastic. Even the past three first-runners up (Philippines, Ukraine, Jamaica) were really natural looking. Let’s hope this is a lasting trend.

(I wouldn’t think of defending a person of such dubious character as Donald Trump, so please don’t take what I write below as an apology on his behalf. I’ll make every possible effort to make sure it doesn’t sound like one.)

I must state that some pageant fans are really a bizarre and unintelectual bunch. Big words like “political” and “business interests” are dispensed willy-nilly on these forums (and other similar ones) as though the will of every country in the planet hinged on the ability to have a contestant–with the country’s name aribitrarily wrapped around her–win a title that amounts to little more than a TV Game Show award.

Please keep your opinions always bound by a sense of grounding. Non-hysterical, unexaggerated commentary is always best, especially when dealing with something as trivial, unimportant, and superficial as a blasted “beauty” contest.

Don’t read me wrong, I watch them, I follow some of them in some detail… But I have never deceived myself about the fact that this is, at most, an indulgence, a guilty pleasure; one mainly derived from the very morbid (but common) desire to see people deal with awful pressure and either triumph or fall on their faces. To say nothing of their flesh-rack nature, which still endears these expensive, outmoded and–to some–offensive dinosaur rituals to millions around the planet.

Please, repeat after me: “The world does not organize itself on account of whom, or of which country’s delegate, wins Miss Universe.” You’ll be a better person for it.
